Practicing Self Care

From the August Issue of SW Lake lifestyle publication

“If I Don’t Block Out Some Time for Self-Care Every Day, It Doesn’t Happen.”

by Kristen Todoroff

August, when kids go back to school, means moms have more time to themselves for the type of self-care that often is neglected by work and family. This month is a perfect time to focus more attention on yourself. Here are a few thoughts from holistic health coach Kristen Todoroff.

SW Lake (SWL): What’s the role of nutrition in self-care?

Kristen Todoroff (KT): The foods we eat literally fuel our bodies. The more clean, whole foods you can incorporate in your diet (and the less processed foods) the better. Check out local farmers markets for the freshest seasonal produce and grass-fed meats. Bonus: you’ll support local farms which will appreciate feeling the love.

SWL: What can a mom do every day for herself?

KT: Adjust daily routines now by setting aside time just for YOU. Maybe this means dedicating 30 minutes in the morning for things you enjoy, cultivating a positive mindset every day. You could spend this time journaling, reading, meditating, or all the above.

SWL: What role does regular exercise play?

KT: Exercise is crucial for our physical and mental well-being, but sometimes it’s tough to find the time or motivation. Try walking with a friend once or twice a week. You can hold each other accountable, share quality time, and get your body moving.

SWL: Why are you a fan of journaling?

KT: Journaling is a powerful tool that can help reduce stress, improve our mood, and elevate our mindset. Taking a little time to put thoughts and feelings on paper makes them more tangible. What you write is up to you. Jot down creative ideas as they come up, write down things you are grateful for, or goals you want to accomplish. The sky’s the limit!

SWL: What can a woman do to relieve the stress of keeping everything in balance?

KT: Now that we’re back to a more normal world, it’s tempting to over-commit. Setting boundaries and letting yourself “go with the flow” instead of packing your schedule completely helps balance free time and obligations.

Pamper yourself with a spa day, girls’ night out or a couples’ massage with your significant other.
